Kanzashi for beginners: learning the basics and simple master classes. How to learn how to make kanzashi for beginners

Traditional Japanese culture began to take shape in the seventeenth century, following the seizure of power by the Tokugawa clan. Geisha, who appeared in the middle of the eighteenth century, made a significant contribution to the formation of the image of the Japanese woman. Previously, Japanese women preferred to wear their long, straight hair loose.

Classic look japanese woman

Geisha introduced the fashion for high hairstyles of the most unusual shapes. To give the hairstyle strength, a variety of hair styling tools allowed: combs, hairpins, long sticks etc. Due to the fact that needlework was given special attention at the geisha school, hair accessories have become an excellent basis for the embodiment of intricate design solutions of Japanese needlewomen.

A hairstyle with a kanzashi flower looks quite unusual

Fancy kanzashi flowers have become more and more often present on the heads of not only geishas, but also ordinary Japanese women from different classes.

Features of kanzashi

The wearing of this traditional jewelry in those days was regulated by a whole set of rules. The appearance of a kanzashi made of flowers and ribbons had to strictly correspond not only to a woman's age, but to her place in society.

Japanese women were strictly forbidden to decorate even open parts of the body - the neck and arms, so this decoration became for them the only opportunity to demonstrate their wealth, delicate taste and even marital status to those around them. Married ladies could afford to wear no more than three kanzashi colors on their heads. Young girls persistently competed with each other in the pretentiousness and high cost of this jewelry.

Japanese women have adorned themselves with different colors since ancient times.

At the same time, for each month of the year, its own characteristics were provided for their appearance as well as a special color scheme for kimono. When creating such jewelry, even the color of the eyes of its owner was taken into account. Some extravagant ladies inserted more than ten different kanzashi into their hairstyles.

Kanzashi add zest and the image becomes unique

Kanzashi style hairpins and hoops decorated with flowers have become extremely popular among young people today. Japanese girls dress them for a wedding ceremony, on days national holidays and for children's events. They are also becoming more and more popular in our country.

What is the basis for this decoration?

For a separate flower or brooch, you need a base in the form of a hairpin.

Hairpins will serve as the basis for decoration

The product should be firmly fixed in the hair, not slip, not sag.

Kanzashi is not just flowers, not just jewelry and hairpins, it is a great art

Consider the types and features of hairpins on sale:

  • "Crocodile" made of iron. Their length ranges from two to ten centimeters. Focus on the thickness of the hair of the future owner of the flower or brooch. For small children, choose short crocodiles, for adults - medium ones, long ones will help tame the head of hair. Preferred model with teeth.
  • Hairpin - cracker. Holds only the smallest kanzashi flowers on thin strands of hair. Useful for children's jewelry or for creating a subtle nuance in the hairstyle.
  • Hoop. Plastic ones are cheaper, but they often break. Choose headbands made of metal or rubber that fit any head size and can withstand multiple extensions. There is a lot of space on the hoop for a needlewoman's fantasy.

What are kanzashi decorated with now?

To transform the basis of the needlewoman use a wide variety of materials and tools:

  • ribbons of crepe satin, satin or organza of various widths;
  • the braid is simple, patterned, mesh, in the form of a tube;
  • rhinestones, beads, buttons;
  • artificial kanzashi flowers, decorative fruits, berries;
  • multi-colored threads.

The more various materials for kanzashi will be used, the richer and more beautiful the product will look

In addition, the work will need:

  • scissors, ruler, pencil, sewing needle, small tweezers;
  • candle or lighter; - glue "Moment-crystal" or similar;
  • fishing line, cord, wire for stringing beads - plain or multi-colored.

The process of making a kanzashi flower is truly fascinating

Types of flowers for kanzashi decoration

Traditionally, kanzashi flowers are made from satin ribbons or organza.

Satin ribbons for kanzashi

Each petal is twisted separately. Then they are connected together: with threads or glue. Large petals are easier to make. They can be rounded or sharp. The folding technique is reminiscent of origami. On the basis of these two types, modern needlewomen invented a dozen more types of flowers. It is more convenient to twist the petals with tweezers, the middle of the finished flower is decorated with beads, stones, rhinestones.

The size of the original square of the ribbon for each petal does not exceed 5 cm. Flowers, for the creation of which natural materials were used, look more vibrant and delicate. When working with artificial ribbons, their edges must be singed a couple of millimeters. This technique can be used to make not only flowers, but also gorgeous butterflies and dragonflies. Some kanzashi elements, for example, in the Ukrainian style, are made from a solid ribbon, and not separate squares.

Features of the Slavic flavor

Ukrainian girls did not ignore this needlework technique and successfully adapted it to create national decorations - wreaths.

Kanzashi is a technique for creating jewelry from flowers made of materials such as silk, organza, satin. The first acquaintance with kanzashi, for beginners to understand this type of needlework, may seem rather difficult. In fact, this technique is incredibly simple. Once you understand its basics, it will be impossible to stop.

Kanzashi - a technique for creating jewelry from flowers made of materials such as silk, organza, satin

The study of any kind of handicraft begins with the basics, since only they help to master it perfectly. One of the most common types of kanzashi, tsumami, is based on only two types of petals: round and sharp, and everything else depends on the imagination and skill of the needlewoman.

DIY basic petals

To make petals, you will need the following materials and tools:

  • satin ribbon 5 cm wide;
  • ruler or centimeter;
  • scissors;
  • tweezers;
  • colorless glue (for example, Moment Crystal) or glue gun;
  • candle, lighter or matches (it is most convenient to work with a candle).

Learning any kind of handicraft starts with the basics

Having prepared everything you need, you can start creating a petal:

  1. Measure 5 cm from the tape and cut.
  2. Fold the resulting square diagonally to form a triangle.
  3. Next, fold both side ends to the middle one in turn so that you get a rhombus.
  4. Then fold the rhombus in half along the back to make a triangle again.
  5. Now you need tweezers. They need to pinch the side of the petal that is crumbling.
  6. Cut the edge and singe.
  7. That's all, the round petal is ready. After making a few more petals, you can collect them into a flower.

A sharp petal is done a little differently:

  1. First, cut out a square, measuring 5 cm from the tape.
  2. Then it folds in half diagonally, turning into a triangle, which also needs to be folded in half.
  3. You will end up with a smaller triangle that you need to fold in half again.
  4. One corner of the resulting shape will have crumbling edges. It must be clamped with tweezers and scorched over the flame of a candle or lighter. The sharp petal is ready.

Having studied the basics of the technique and learning how to make basic petals, you can start making a variety of colors: both simple and complex. At the very beginning, it is best to rely on master classes that describe in detail the entire process of completing blanks and assembly.

How to make the simplest kanzashi flower?

After making several base petals, you can make one, albeit simple, but very beautiful flower.

The manufacturing process can be divided into three stages:

  1. The collection of petals, carried out both with glue and with a thread with a needle. Moreover, the second option is preferable, since it provides the most reliable adhesion to each other.
  2. The design of the back of the flower consists in gluing a base to it, suitable for further use. It can be felt or ordinary cardboard, covered with a matching fabric.
  3. Front side decoration. After collecting a flower, it leaves an open center, which does not always look beautiful. You can hide it using various beads or other small details. They can be glued with both hot glue and Moment.

After making several base petals, you can make one, albeit simple, but very beautiful flower

After these stages, the flower is completely ready. It can be used as a decoration for a hair tie, headband, comb or brooch.

How to make a dahlia using kanzashi with your own hands: step by step instructions

A wide variety of flowers are collected from satin ribbons, including dahlias. Moreover, the petals for them are folded in a slightly different way. How exactly, you will find out below.

Prepare the following materials for work:

  • satin ribbon 2.5 and 1.2 cm wide;
  • scissors;
  • tweezers;
  • glue (moment crystal or hot);
  • ruler;
  • candle;
  • a piece of felt.

A wide variety of flowers are collected from satin ribbons, including dahlias

Step-by-step instructions for making a flower include:

  1. Preparation. At this step, blanks for the petals are made from the tape. From a tape 2.5 cm wide, rectangles 7 cm long are cut, and from the other - rectangles 5 cm wide.One flower needs to prepare from 27 to 30 pieces. large rectangles and 16-20 pcs. small.
  2. Making petals. Take one of the rectangles with the wrong side facing you, mentally divide it into three equal parts. Next, fold the left edge inward at a 90º angle, with the corner apex at the third point. Then you need to connect the top and bottom vertices by bending the left edge of the tape again. In this case, you should pay attention to its ends, they should converge. Further on front side of the resulting figure, fold the sides inward. Moreover, we bend the upper part slightly, but the lower one is slightly larger (the side edges should converge in the center). Fix the edge of the petal with tweezers, and use a candle to singe the ends. Perform the rest of the flower petals in the same way.
  3. Assembly. Take a piece of felt and cut out a circle with a diameter of 4 cm. The petals will be collected on it. And this is done like this: take one large petal, smear its bottom corner from the wrong side, attach it to the felt base and press lightly. This is how the first circle is glued. The remaining petals are used for the second circle, and it is desirable to place their tops between the first petals. In the event that after gluing the second circle, you still have petals, glue them to seamy side the basics. So the first row of the flower will become more magnificent. Now it remains to attach small petals. Their first row is glued to the central large petals, that is, they seem to be embedded one inside the other. The rest are evenly distributed within the central circle of the felt base.
  4. Decoration. After all the petals of the flower are collected, the center remains open. It can be covered with a bead, carnation or some other small decoration.

That's all, the dahlia flower using the kanzashi technique is completely ready.

  1. Cut six squares of lilac tape 5 cm wide and four squares of blue tape. Cut two squares from a 4 cm wide ribbon. Burn the edges of the ribbons so that they do not bloom during operation.

  1. Next, we form round petals from the blue squares. To do this, fold the blanks diagonally.

  1. Then we wrap the upper and lower corners to a straight line.

  1. We open the blank. Fix the junction of the corners with a clothespin so that the petal does not fall apart. Set it aside.

  1. Take a square of purple ribbon and fold it in half diagonally.

  1. Now fold again by joining the top and bottom corners.

  1. We fold the workpiece a third time, putting a round petal inside.

  1. Trim the corners of the two petals together.

  1. Melt the fabric at the cut. Press down on the seam with your fingers to secure it in place.

  1. Trim the bottom of the petal.

  1. Place the resulting petal in an additional triangle.

  1. Make a double sharp kanzashi petal. Perform another such petal.

  1. From 4 × 4 cm squares, make one round and one sharp petal. As a result, you should have six blanks in total: 2 snail leaves, 2 double petals, 1 sharp and a smaller round petal.

  1. We begin to collect the butterfly. First, glue together the small circular piece on the sides of the two double petals.

  1. The body of the butterfly will serve as a small sharp petal. We glue it.

  1. We also glue two blanks of snail leaves on the sides.

  1. The junction of all the petals can be decorated with a stone or rhinestone. Glue the stamens to the upper round petal, which will serve as antennae.

Candlesticks in Kanzashi technique

Jewelry box in Kanzashi technique

If you figure out how to do Kanzashi, it becomes clear that it is not at all difficult.

Materials and tools

In order to make products using the Kanzashi technique, you will need the following materials and devices:

You can cut the fabric or ribbons with scissors, as well as with a soldering iron. To do this, you need a surface to cut on. It may be an old unnecessary kitchen board, but I preferred a regular wall tile (left over after repair), its soldering iron does not burn through and it is easier to clean. Some petals can be burned with a candle or lighter.

It is better to use a thick and transparent glue so that it does not leave marks after drying. I opted for "Moment-gel": transparent, does not flow, adheres well.

Many people advise using tweezers when folding the petals.
I use tweezers when I fire the fabric over the candle.

  • satin ribbons of any size, optimally 5 cm and 2.5 cm, but you can take any fabric: silk, satin, organza, etc.
  • ruler
  • pencil or chalk for marking straight squares
  • scissors (any, most importantly - sharp)
  • lighter and candle or soldering iron (if you know how to use it)
  • glue "Moment-gel" or glue (hot) gun
  • tweezers (preferably long)
  • long and not thick needle
  • strong thread (e.g. monofilament)
  • beads, sequins and all sorts of beautiful little things

I think over time you yourself will decide how and what is more convenient for you to work.

Types of Kanzashi petals

Kanzashi's technique is as follows: many small even squares of fabric are folded in a certain way and assembled into a flower. The petals themselves are sewn together or glued together.

As strange as it may sound, there are only 2 types of kanzashi petals: round and narrow, and the rest is room for your imagination.

Using the example of such a flower, we will learn how to fold narrow and round petals:

Narrow kanzashi petal - master class

We use the same materials and tools as listed above.

We cut straight squares with a soldering iron or scissors. I have a satin ribbon 5 cm wide, which means 5 by 5 cm squares. Their number depends on the size of the flower that you will collect. There are 7 yellow and 5 green.

It is often advised to fold the leaves with tweezers. To be honest, my fingers are more comfortable, but whoever likes it better.

We fold it into such an even triangle. The fold itself is on top.

We apply the right corner of the triangle to the left.

And add it again in the same way, from right to left. Align the folds.

Cut the ends of the fabric evenly:

And we burn it a little over the candle, fastening the edges at the same time. This is done like this: holding the edges with tweezers, quickly draw the petal over the flame.

It is better to burn it at the very bottom of the fire, then the fabric will melt, and not burn.

We also cut and melt the lower edges. Here you can not glue them together, but simply melt the fabric so that it does not crumble.

Here's what we got:

Back view

By the same principle, we roll up the rest of the green leaves.

For clarity, watch the video master class on Kanzashi's narrow petals:

Round kanzashi petal - master class

We turn the yellow square into a triangle.

And now we collect the side edges in the middle, towards the bottom corner. The folds are at the top, at the sides.

We take the side corners back, check that the edges are evenly folded.

We also cut off the tips and melt them.

We also cut the lower edge evenly and melt it.

Only here the edges must be burned and must be glued together.
While the fabric is warm, I simply pinch the edges with my fingers.

Here's what we got. On this side, drip a little glue inside and glue the sheet.

These are the blanks we got. Here you can clearly see where the yellow petals stick together.

In the video master class, you can once again see how round petals are made, and also learn how to collect beautiful rubber bands for hair:

How to make kanzashi flowers

Let's start collecting the kanzashi flower. We string yellow petals on a needle and thread. I prefer monofilament because it is not visible.

And we connect here in such a flower:

Cut out circles from cardboard and tape, put a cardboard circle on the tape, grease it abundantly with glue.

And, tucking the edges, we glue the fabric to the paper. Let the glue dry a little and once again spread the surface with glue.

Then we glue the blank to the flower from the back.

It is better to use glue here than a glue gun. Since our flower is voluminous, it is very difficult to glue exactly right away. And while the glue dries, you can touch up the leaves to make it look smooth. It is difficult to do this with a glue gun - the glue hardens very quickly and it is rather problematic to peel it back off.

Here's what we got:

Apply glue to the tip of the green leaf (here I am using a glue gun)

And we connect it with the second leaf.

We make two double leaves.

We also grease a single leaf with glue and glue it between two already connected leaves.

In the same way, we already glue three leaves to a double one.

Here's a twig should turn out:

Lubricate the tip of the twig with glue

And we glue it between the leaves of the flower.

Glue a bead or strass in the middle of the flower.

Such a kanzashi flower can be used to decorate a brooch, a hairpin, and an elastic band for hair. And if you dream a little, then you can create a lot from the 2 simplest kanzashi petals!

Japanese handicrafts are always striking in their originality and minimal costs. To create delightful masterpieces of style, the main tool is fabric and an incredible amount of painstaking work and perseverance.
Recently, a flower has become a very popular accessory for all fashionistas. Most often it is made by hand using one of the handicraft techniques. Today I will tell you how to make a kanzashi rose at home with your own hands.

  • Two types of satin ribbons, 5 cm wide.
  • scissors
  • candle or lighter
  • tweezers
  • sewing pins
  • thread with a needle.
The first step is to cut the tapes into equal lengths. Each piece should be 5 cm wide and 10 cm long.

In order to be able to work with the tapes without loss, you need to melt their edges over the fire. Try to bring the edge to the lower level of the fire, so the material does not melt too much or smoke. By the way, you need to bring the fabric to the fire with the wrong side down so as not to leave streaks or traces of soot on the front.

To make my rose, I needed 18 pieces of fuchsia ribbon for the petals and 4 pieces of green for the leaves.
We start making petals. Place the tape vertically, wrong side up. Now, fold the upper right corner to the middle of the lower part.

We do the same with the left side.

Repeat the procedure with the left corner and secure the resulting "house" with a pin.

To create a flower, you need 22 petals: 18 pink and 4 green.

Now, we collect everything in one tape. To do this, you need a thread to match the outer petals (I have a green one) and a long needle (better beaded). Sew the right half of the petal,

and on the left we put the right part of the second petal and sew them together.

Using this method, we collect all the prepared petals on a string.

Now we begin to twist the bud,

Gradually stitching them with a thread at the base.

When almost the whole flower is twisted,

you need to sew the entire base with a overcast seam to secure the result.

We begin to gradually give our bud correct shape, to do this, bend the petals down one by one.

The result is a flower like this.

If we want to use it as a brooch, we need to attach a clasp to it. The ideal solution would be to simply use the base from the old unnecessary icon,

but you can design something like that yourself. To make it, you will need 2 pieces of cardboard or plastic, scissors, glue and an ordinary pin. We make small cuts in the cardboard and carefully thread a pin through them so that the fixed part remains below.

Then we glue the second layer of cardboard for the thickness.
