How to make artificial stones?

If you do not have a stone, and you want to learn how to draw, then in art stores you can buy stones specially prepared for drawing. different shapes... The choice is very wide. But it is much cheaper to make a stone of the size and shape you need yourself. What is needed for this?

1. Prepare a container (basin or bucket).
2. Pour a small amount of water.
3. Pour sand into the container up to the water level (excess water should not stand above the sand).
4. Make an indentation of the desired shape in the sand.
5. Cover the recess with transparent polyethylene.
6. Knead with ordinary cement mortar and pour it into your mold (you can add pigment to the cement, which will give the background to your future stone).
7. Cover the mold with plastic and fill it with sand on top (so that the stone does not crack).
8. After the cement is dry, you can start painting.

What paints should I use?

The most popular stone paints are:

• acrylic;
• gouache;
• watercolor;
• special compositions for painting ceramics.

All of these paints can be used when creating your own craft, but it is best to use acrylic paints, as they have a number of significant advantages over the others:

- do not fade in the sun (unlike watercolors with gouache);
- dry quickly (about 15 minutes);
- odorless, non-toxic (good to draw both on the street and in the house);
- do not crack;
- very well withstand low and high temperatures;
- do not wash off with water;
- affordable (as opposed to special formulations).

What can you draw on a stone?

5. Leave your masterpiece to dry for 15-20 minutes.
6. For reliability, coat the pebble with a layer of acrylic varnish.

What paint to use

Acrylic, gouache, watercolor. They also use paints for ceramics and porcelain, and then they are fired in the oven.

Varnish for coating

The product is varnished. Acrylic or yacht varnish.

Acrylic paints are the most successful and "professional" option; any varnish, both aqueous and non-aqueous, fits well on acrylic paints. Yacht varnish gives a very strong film. Acrylics have a huge palette of colors, there are metallic colors that add shine to the stone.

Brushes

Take a small set of brushes. You will most likely need a wide one for a primer or background, a narrow one for small details, and a medium one for painting.

Where to start

1. Of course, you need to start with an idea, that is, an idea of ​​what will be on the stone.
2. Then the primer. There is a special acrylic primer. Whether or not to do a primer is a question, so to speak, for self-determination. The fish is drawn directly on the stone, the structure of the stone is clearly visible on it.

3. The paint becomes darker when applied without a primer, as the dark stone shines through.

On the primed surface, the paint will lie flat, and the color will be the same as on the palette.

Using a pencil, divide the stone into three sections. Make the center section larger than the rest.

In the center of the strip we "cut out" a triangle.

3. When you are satisfied with your sketch, draw in black paint over the outlines using the tip of the brush.

4. Apply base on the wings with a small flat brush - white paint... The next layers, already colored, will be much brighter from this.

5. We paint the body with something dark brown(I used burnt umber)

6. With a lighter color (eg burnt sienna) add a row of stripes on the brown body.

7. Highlight the center of each stripe with Yellow ocher.
Advice.
Light and shadow are the most powerful tools for bringing out the characteristics of animals. The tonal contrast between dark and light areas heightens impact and adds realism to all of your work.

8. Paint the wings in bright colors. I chose orange, made by mixing red and yellow. I always prefer mixing colors instead of using ready-made ones. Apply the paint in two coats.

9. Draw black dots on the wings with a small round brush. Do not try to make them completely round, this does not happen in nature.
10. Now you can paint the rest of the stone with black paint.

11. Draw the head (small circle with white paint). Two white dots for the eyes and an oval for the mouth - that's the whole muzzle.

12. Now with a liner (or just a brush-one) in white paint two hook-shaped tendrils on both sides of the head.

14. Dissolve some white paint in water to get a transparent color. The lower wings that we are drawing now are so transparent that the body of a ladybug is visible through them. Paint over the lower wings using a small round brush.

6. Your ladybug finished. Cover it with varnish to protect the stone. Change colors to create beetles to your liking.

The Black Sea, smooth pebbles ... Today I don’t even know which I liked more - the first or the second. Probably all together, but the sea was far away, and the pebbles ... All brought home wine and cognac, laurel and eucalyptus brooms and all kinds of "souvenirs" from the South, and I was carrying stones! There were quite a lot of sea pebbles, they were of different sizes and colors - these are small colored pebbles, almost stone chips, and flat monochromatic pebbles, and cobblestones, sharp-angled with veins. So, there were a lot of stones, ideas too, it remains to start. And I began my stone-art work with the painting of flat, light-colored nubs that I especially liked.

To paint sea pebbles, I needed:

• pebbles (flat, even, smooth, no cracks, plain - it can be any, depending on your idea)
• simple slate pencil, eraser
• paints, markers
• brush, needle
• floor and parquet varnish
• nail polish remover with acetone
• cotton wool and cotton swabs.

Pebble painting technology

Painting on stone is not an invention of "homemade", but an ancient art that we inherited from our cave ancestors. Today, stone painting is an independent and respected art. In the West, there are whole clubs of amateurs and communities of professionals in stone painting, they share experiences, conduct master classes, arrange special exhibitions and even sell their stone arts.

Our stone painting is just beginning to gain popularity. Frankly speaking, there are no hard and fast rules in this matter, no specific technique, no clear instructions. Everyone paints the pebbles in their own way, often discovering "their own America." On a smooth sea pebble or an ordinary "local" cobblestone, you can depict anything you want, if you have imagination and desire - there are no restrictions. It can be a ladybug or just a ladybug, a fish, a cat, a dog or a favorite hamster. Even the lack of artistic skills is not an obstacle if you want to try yourself as a pebble artist.
So, let's start painting the stone!
First, select a stone and decide if you will primer or paint on an untreated surface. From the very beginning I decided that I would not be priming, it was decided in principle in order to preserve the natural color of sea pebbles and its texture as the background.
After that, come up with a drawing that you will apply. Often the very shape of the sea pebbles, its color and texture suggest the future picture. Then paint in stone simple pencil what you have in mind. After the sketch is made, proceed to painting with paints.
Many lovers of painting on stones recommend ordinary gouache, acrylic paints or varnish markers for painting stones. Having tried both, I can say that gouache does not fit well on the surface of an unprimed stone. Acrylic paints are better suited for painting stones - colors are more varied, brighter and fit well. However, I also refused from ordinary acrylics, choosing only acrylic "metallic" - they give a pleasant shine, moreover, they are more liquid than ordinary acrylics. I didn't like the lacquer markers either. I settled on paints for painting glass and ceramics - they are brighter, even if they are applied in one layer, they fit perfectly, evenly, smoothly, and after drying they give a beautiful lacquer gloss. They are intended for painting on porcelain and are fixed by firing in an ordinary oven, but I did not need this, only their artistic qualities and the effect of gloss.
After I applied the pencil drawing, I moved on to coloring the stone. First, I applied the outline with light gold acrylic paint. I applied it with a needle, for my taste, even the thinnest brush is too thick for this. The needle draws lines subtly, clearly. The absence of a primer allows you to touch up and correct the drawing. Regular nail polish remover is fine for fixing things that didn't work out, for example, to erase uneven contours.

When the outline was dry, I applied the selected paints. I must say that paints for glass and ceramics dry quickly if applied in a thin layer. On the pebble with the lizard, I first applied a thin layer of silver acrylic paint, without painting over the unevenness of the stone, but only slightly giving the surface silver. Now it remains to cover the painted sea pebbles with varnish so that the drawing on them is preserved for a long time and does not peel off.
I did not varnish the entire stone, I applied varnish only to the drawing itself, without going beyond the contour. This was also a part of my idea, the drawing on the "natural" stone seems to me "more alive", "more soulful", the natural color of the material is preserved, its texture is felt. And to the touch it is all the same sea pebbles, which until recently the sea so diligently grinded.
The pebbles are painted! What's next?
And then you can lay out the painted pebbles on the desktop to please the eye and remind you of a vacation, give it to your friends, or you can fill a transparent glass vase with them - what is not an exclusive interior detail? I decided otherwise: I bought the most ordinary small magnets, glue - a colorless gel-moment - and glued magnets to the painted pebbles.
