Do-it-yourself paper tumbler. How to make simple toys roly-poly and somersault

It is believed that the roly-poly is a toy for kids. It's one thing to play with a tumbler, and another to do it yourself. Our young inventor happily began to make tumblers and made two wonderful toys that are fun and fun to play with not only for kids.

  • plastic capsule from kinder surprise (in a house where there are children, there are always such :));
  • a few small nuts (dads or boys always have them);
  • candle and matches;
  • several multi-colored thin wires;
  • ready eyes.

We put 6-8 nuts in a container from a kinder surprise toy. The nuts will serve as the center of gravity of our tumbler and will force the tumbler to always assume a vertical position.

So that the nuts do not hang out, we fix them with candle wax. To do this, light a candle and drip wax directly onto the nuts. Make sure the child does this very carefully, as there is a risk of getting burned or melting the plastic egg.

Once the wax has set, close the container and poke holes in the top for the tumbler's hair. The plastic is quite soft, so it is easily pierced with an awl or pushpin.

We made 3 holes:

We make hair out of pieces of multi-colored wires: carefully insert them into the holes and fix them with super glue from the inside.

Close the container and glue the eyes. We work with super glue carefully so as not to stick our fingers to the tumbler :)

We draw a mouth and other elements:

The tumbler is ready! We made two tumblers - a boy and a girl. Tumblers not only do not want to lie down, but also spin very cool! Children played with them for a long time: either they tried to lay them down, or they competed, whose tumbler would spin longer. And most importantly, the children understood why the tumbler cannot be laid down and why the center of gravity is needed.

Marina Suzdaleva

Walking along the shelves with the so-called educational toys for children, I came to the conclusion that my 5-month-old daughter does not need such a gift from Santa Claus for New Year. On the one hand, all these toys seem to me somehow of the same type, on the other hand, Yegor left a lot of such toys (after all, in his first months of life, I was not yet an enthusiastic mother and bought everything that I could “reach out to”), moreover But, Vasilisa, of course, as yet there is no business either with gifts, or with Santa Claus, or with the New Year. Nevertheless, a couple of days before the New Year, the “super mom” inside me still woke up, and I decided to make a gift for Vasilisa myself - make a do-it-yourself toy. The whole evening I drew sketches of a future toy - at first I had an idea to make it in the form of a snowman, then in the form of the head of Santa Claus, and finally (probably inspired by what we recently held), I settled on what I would do roly-poly Christmas tree.

For work I needed:

  • a large plastic container from a chocolate egg;
  • materials for making a tumbler - we have plasticine and a handful of screws;
  • Iris threads in three shades of green and brown, hook No. 1.5, scissors, needle;
  • beads to decorate the Christmas tree and give it additional sensory value;
  • filler for the top of the Christmas tree - I used a rustling bag, you can use any other lightweight filler like synthetic winterizer that will not shift the center of gravity.

My sequence of actions was as follows:

As you understand, the Christmas tree itself or any other figurine for your tumbler can be sewn with your own hands, made from a lost sock, children's tights, gloves, paper, plastic bottle etc. etc., well, I’ll write how to tie a Christmas tree like mine, for those who, like me, with a hook for “you” (because those with a hook for “you”, without my description tie such a simple Christmas tree).

The easiest way, of course, is to knit a Christmas tree in one color, but I wanted to use three colors (development of color perception and all that). I alternated the colors every 3 rows, and in every fourth row I made an increase. Of course, I didn’t come up with such a cunning scheme myself, I previously reviewed a hundred or two master classes. Looks like the source is somewhere here. In the course of knitting, I knitted beads in random order. For perfectionists specially found detailed video about how this is done “according to science”, because I probably won’t be able to describe in words how I knitted them (the main thing is that it turned out very strong):

Crochet Christmas tree:

1 row: We start knitting from the top. Whoever knows how, starts with an amigurumi ring, and in the old fashioned way I dial a chain of 5 air loops, close it into a ring and knit 6 single crochets into the ring (hereinafter referred to as st.b.n.).

2 row: 2 st.b.n. in each loop of the previous row = 12 st.b.n.

3rd row: 12 st.b.n.

4th row: 12 st.b.n.

5 row: change the thread to the second shade, 12 st.b.n.

Recently became a mother of a baby?

6 row: (1 st.b.n., 2 st.b.n. in one loop of the previous row) * 6 = 18 st.b.n.

7th row: 18 st.b.n.

8 row: change the thread to the third shade, 18 st.b.n.

9 row: 18 st.b.n.

10 row: (2 st.b.n., 2 st.b.n. in one loop of the previous row) * 6 = 24 st.b.n.

11 row: change of thread to the first shade, 24 st.b.n. etc.

When the cone reached the height I needed (I tried on the width of the egg, so that the egg began to taper below the knitting edge), I knitted a couple of rows with decreases and took up the trunk. The trunk was knitted simply in a circle with a brown thread, adding 6 st.b.n. in every second row. (In general, here I already knitted by eye, trying on the base of the egg.

I connected two parts of the Christmas tree with one row of single crochet posts, after filling the top of the Christmas tree with a rustling bag and inserting a tumbler egg inside.

Our tree is ready! Vasilisa and all of us liked her very much. And you? You can see our roly-poly Christmas tree in action on my Facebook page - here here.

This article proposes to remind you of a simple and interesting toy from your childhood. Surely many of you had a funny and kind "roly-poly". And many people remember how they could watch for hours how the "Roly-Vstanka" randomly spins and sways from side to side. It is also told about the no less interesting and simple “somersault”. The principle of operation of both toys is very simple, and you can easily do original gift prophetic child by reading our article.

Types of tumblers and their principle of operation:

Tumblers are very different, since this toy is known in many nationalities, it has a great many names, not to mention the forms (Figure No. 1), and modifications.

Figure number 1 - Tumbler options

Although, no matter how you name the tumbler, what kind of wrapping you don’t put it in, how you don’t color the principle of action, they all have the same.

The design of the tumbler is simple and straightforward. As a rule, this is a pear-shaped body inside of which a weight is fixed at the bottom - it then returns the tumbler to its original position (Figure No. 2).

Figure number 2 - Tumbler sketch

How to make a tumbler:

Naturally, you can easily and simply make a tumbler yourself, you just need to turn on your imagination. For example, you can use egg shells. All you need to do is punch a small hole in the top of the chicken egg, then pour out or drink all its contents (this is up to your taste). After that, it is necessary to pour weights into the punched hole (weights for fishing, pieces of lead, nuts, pebbles). Distribute them in such a way that they fit compactly on the bottom eggshell. Next, you need to pour paraffin or wax (what is at hand) from a candle there and melt it inside the egg, gently holding it over the flame. Then, without turning over or changing the position of the weights, wait until the wax cools down. That's all, in principle, the tumbler is ready, all that remains is to seal the hole in the shell and paint your toy.

Attention, if the weight is not fixed at the bottom of the tumbler, then it will not return to its original position (Figure 3).

Figure No. 3 - If you do not fix the weight

Although even in this version, your toy will look original - as it was put - it lies and does not roll. But this is no longer a tumbler, but another toy.

How to make a somersault:

There is another original toy very similar to a tumbler - this is a “somersault” (at least I call it that) figure No. 4.

Figure number 4 - Somersault

You can make a somersault yourself, for example, cut a reamer from cardboard as shown in Figure No. 5 and glue it by placing a ball inside (Figure No. 6).

Figure No. 5 - Sketch of a rollover roll.

The secret is simple, inside the tumbler there is an ordinary ball from a bearing (picture No. 6), which rolls, making the toy move in a very unusual way.

Smiling face, round Blue eyes, bright outfit and amazing ability to return to its original position. The grandparents of today's hyperactive toddlers, who are merrily and surprised trying to knock over their favorite toy, remember very well the Roly-Vstanka of their childhood. The roly-poly doll was one of the first entertainments of several generations. The current "tumblers" can differ significantly in appearance, bringing the same joy. You can make a toy with your own hands. improvised materials, a small amount of time, fantasy - a roly-poly doll toy is ready.

Facts and legends

The toy owes its origin to the mysterious East. The legend claims that the prototype of the "Roly-Vstanka" was the ancient one who for a decade kept a vow of silence and immobility, as a result of which he lost his arms and legs. Further, a roly-poly doll, the description of which is found in ancient books, came to Japan, isolated from the rest of the world for a long time, having received the name "darum" after the name of a hermit monk. The toy is credited with the ability to grant wishes. Eyes are not drawn on the face. The one who received a daruma as a gift draws one eye, making a wish, its fulfillment is marked by the other eye. Otherwise, the tumbler is burned, following the tradition, on the eve of the next New Year. To Europe and Russia original children's entertainment, which has become a favorite for many generations, was brought by travelers.

The Russian version received a head, a cheerful smile, and national clothes. There was a headdress, a musical instrument. Stabilizing abilities, sound effects appreciated. Soviet industry for many years made the mass production of "Vanka-Vstanka".

Design tricks

The roly-poly doll has a simple o round shape. main feature- to rise from a lying position - due to the physical principle of stable balance. Correct location cargo inside the lower part of the daruma ─ the main rule of manufacture. Guided by this law, it is easy to determine which takes a vertical position, swings in different directions, turns around its axis.

  1. Vertical lift: the load is installed at the bottom of the cavity, always fixing it motionless (filled with paraffin, wax).
  2. "Swinging somersault" is performed by securing the load on a flexible basis.
  3. By adding a rigid pin with an articulated mount, they achieve. By creating a complex trajectory for moving the sinker, you can “teach” the tumbler to turn and swing at the same time.
  4. Craftsmen attach a load, connect it with an elastic thread, a thin spring with handles and legs. The roly-poly doll balances like an acrobat, takes steps.
  5. The pinnacle of the art of making modern daruma is ferromagnetic fuel. A suspended magnet helps the liquid to overflow, Roly-Vstanka dances.

Fantasy and creativity

A huge assortment of factory-made toys, bright and cheerful, expensive and not very expensive, makes it possible to please the baby with an interesting, unobtrusive gift. A do-it-yourself tumbler will bring pleasure not only to the child, but also to the mother. Older children can be attracted to joint work, the process will strengthen family friendships. Any hollow vessel with a round bottom will serve as the base of the toy. The best option is the body of everyone's favorite chocolate egg. Having fixed a weight on the bottom of the vessel, the plastic container is filled with beads of different sizes, materials, and weights. The result is a beautiful rattle. Outside, the toy is sheathed with bright shreds, painted with cheerful colors.

Lovers of wood crafts can carve a hollow toy from a suitable tree, install a sinker, decorate, varnish. Such a souvenir will be an excellent gift not only little child, parents will be happy to receive a masterpiece specially made by their own hands.

The original figurine for the holiday is obtained from an ordinary eggshell. The insides are blown out or poured out, the resulting container is washed out, a small load (nut, heavy bead) is carefully lowered down, fixed with wax or paraffin. The first way: drip with a candle until the entire weight is covered, the second: finely chop the wax, fall asleep and warm it over a low flame, after fixing it in correct position. When the base hardens, they draw a smiling face, put on a finished hat, cap, bow ─ a unique gift is ready.

branded toy

The classic face of your favorite toy has long gone out of the standard. The roly-poly doll, the photo of which can be seen in the article, depicts a favorite cartoon character, the hero of a computer game. The author's fantasy helps to give the tumbling doll the features of a beloved offspring, which will make the game more fun. light ball for ping pong will make the toy convenient and compact for the little ones. Small size will allow you to make a swinging "family". By painting the little men with different colors, by drawing numbers or letters, they create an additional educational game tool.

Learning by playing

The six-month-old boy happily plays with the new "Roly-Vstanka". Simultaneously distinguishes when swaying, develops fine motor skills, happily rocking the pet.

A two-year-old future man gives his favorite toy "tasks" - to guard the castle, the young lady teaches how to sit at the table correctly, monitor behavior, repeating the rules that she hears from her parents. Description of the toy, learning to count, and much more is much more pleasant to learn with your favorite tumbler.

Functional souvenirs

Childhood memories are the most vivid. The first toy is associated with joy and good mood. Tumbler doll, given to a friend, close person for a birthday, family holiday, strengthen warm relations. A souvenir can carry a functional load. By placing a small clock mechanism in a tumbler, they build an excellent alarm clock that always keeps its balance. A young mother will be pleased to receive a non-pouring cup for her baby as a gift. The whole trick: a rounded base with a load is glued to the bottom of the plastic cup, preventing the dishes from falling, keeping the balance.

Fantasy and love will help in the work.

Who does not know what a roly-poly (aka Roly-Vstanka) is? A simple plastic doll with a spherical body. You swing it to the side, and it stubbornly returns to a vertical position. It turns out that there are already probably hundreds of modifications of tumblers. With arms and legs, able to perform wonderful dance steps. There are tumblers that can be put to bed or, for example, able to stand on their heads. And a great many devices that use the “Vanka-vstanka principle” for practical purposes.

The simplest roly-poly is arranged uncomplicated. A hollow rounded body in which the center of gravity is maximally lowered down. In such a way that when the body is tilted, the load rises and tends to return the doll to a vertical position. This toy attracts attention by the fact that everyday experience tells us that such a structure should seem to fall at the slightest effort. On the contrary, she stubbornly jumps up. An ordinary ball has a center of gravity equidistant from any point on the surface. Therefore, it has an “indifferent balance” - no matter how you put it on a plane, it will lie from it. Screw the “head” to it - the center of gravity will shift up and the toy will overturn. But a hollow ball with a displaced center of gravity will always tend to turn around with the load down, occupying a stable equilibrium position.

The origin of the roly-poly

It is believed that the tumbler came to us from Japan. There it had a round shape and was called Daruma. It was believed that such a doll brings good luck. Darums with unpainted eyes were sold or given away. When making a wish, the Japanese painted over one eye of the doll, and when it was fulfilled, the second was painted over. Our Vanka found a head and appeared at fairs at the beginning of the 19th century.

Such a Vanka was turned on a lathe from linden, a lead weight was inserted into the lower part and the doll was painted with bright colors. It would seem, how else can you improve the simplest ball with a load? Engineering thought reached Vanka-Vstanka.

Vanki-vstanki: “advanced options”

You can make Vanka complicate the oscillatory movements by making the position of the center of gravity changeable. Here in this model, the load is fixed on a flexible pin. Oscillating at its own frequency, it introduces additional harmonics into the swinging of the tumbler.

And here the additional load is fixed on a rigid pin, but having a hinged mount. He will force the doll to make additional rotational movements.

The design of this model is simpler. Here the ball rolls freely at the bottom of the doll. But in the bear shown below, the balls roll down a spiral path, causing it to sway and at the same time rotate around its axis in the opposite direction.

When tilted, the load connected by an elastic thread to the arms causes the tumbler to raise the arm opposite to the upward tilt. It seems that the toy is balancing with its arms, trying to maintain balance. But since there can be arms, why not attach legs too? Here such Vanka can even move a little :).

Very unusual movements are made by puppets on “liquid fuel”. Here, the load is a ferromagnetic fluid flowing under the action of not only gravity, but also a suspended magnet. Even the choreographer will marvel at the smoothness of the movements of such a dancer.

Tumbler in action

The tumbler effect finds its application in everyday life. Here is such a children's mug-non-tilting, in which the nipple will not roll on the table.

A watch that will always be in a vertical position.

Or an iron that is hard to forget on expensive dress, because it rises to the non-working position, one has only to release it from the hand.

And here is an unusual case for a mobile phone, which is more difficult to lose in the surrounding space, because it, like a float, tends to take up a vertical position.

Vanka-vstanka at leisure

You can amuse the kids by making a tumbler out of scrap materials. We take an egg, carefully pierce it with a needle from both sides and blow the insides into a cup (useful for an omelet). The task is to place the load inside the whole shell. This can be done, for example, by melting the candle and pouring it into the shell by about a third. Now put the egg in the position in which our tumbler should be and let the stearin harden. The roly-poly is ready. It remains to close up the holes and paint it under Vanka, under Daruma, or under the Easter egg - as you like.
