Decoupage wooden boxes different types of decoration. Vintage style jewelry box

How can you radically change the design of an item? To transform old thing an original element of the interior? It is necessary to resort to the decoupage technique, which involves decorating old objects with paint, varnish, paper or napkins. One of the most common decoupage styles is vintage. You can give a valuable antique look to a chair, chest of drawers, casket, chest, book. People who are just mastering the decoupage technique are advised to start by decorating small objects, for example, wooden boxes, and watch the master class first.

A master class on painting and drawing on a box begins with the preparation of materials and tools:

  1. Decoupage cards, napkins or paper with a selected image.
  2. Sandpaper.
  3. Acrylic paints.
  4. Craquelure varnish (optional).
  5. Glue.
  6. Screwdriver. Necessary if the box has removable metal elements.
  7. Wax. You can take a candle.
  8. Brushes.
  9. Sponge.

In order to complete all the work in the correct sequence, it is recommended to watch a master class on decoupage boxes on video.

For decoupage, you can take a plastic box, but it is better to take a product made of wood. Before decorating, the box must be prepared.

Step-by-step instructions for pre-processing an item:

Advice! To prevent paint from getting on the inside of the box, you need to stick adhesive tape on the inner edges of the product.

After all these steps, you can proceed to transfer the picture. But, if you need to get a realistic vintage item, you should use some tricks and artificially age the product.

Craquelure technology

Valuable antiques are often frayed and cracked. To create the same effect on a modern jewelry box, you can use a special craquelure varnish which cracks when dry. It is applied in one stroke to the base color.

You can achieve this effect using ordinary acrylic paints. This requires:

  1. Cover with base paint. It is done after sanding. It is recommended to take a dark color, such as brown, as a base. The paint should dry completely.
  2. Apply wax. With its help, you can get the fading effect.
  3. Cover the box with light paint. You can take white, cream, light gray, pale blue, pink or other light paint. Before proceeding to the next stage, you need to wait until the product is completely dry.
  4. Rubbing with sandpaper. It is carried out until the upper one begins to protrude under the lower layer of paint. Step by step instructions the craquelure can be seen in the photo.

If the owner of the box does not like the worn paint, then the craquelure stage can be skipped.

Decorating with an image

The next stage of the master class is the application of the image. In order for decoupage of a wooden box in the old style to be successful, all actions must be performed step by step:

  1. Image preparation. A napkin or decoupage card should be placed face down on the surface of the box, and the edges should be drawn around with a pencil. Next, you need to cut out the drawing.
  2. Applying glue to the surface of the box with a flat brush.
  3. Bonding the image. It must also be coated on top with glue. PVA may leave white streaks on the surface, but after drying, the streaks disappear. There should be no space between the paper and the box. air bubbles... If they appear, you should raise the drawing on one side, lower it again, getting rid of the bubble, and grease it again with glue.
  4. Rubbing corners and edges with a sponge dipped in dark paint.

The final stage

After the glue has completely dried, the box should be varnished in several layers. The varnish will protect the image from abrasion. Each coat of varnish must dry before applying the next.

After the varnish has dried, the metal parts must be replaced. If the old jewelry does not fit the vintage style, it should be replaced.

Additional decor

As additional decorative elements, you can use old black and white and yellowed photographs or postcards, buttons and lace. All these elements are attached with glue.

White lace can be further aged by applying beige acrylic paint to it. After drying, the lace can be glued to the outer or inner sides of the box. Lace makes the box feminine and sophisticated. Decoupage of a wooden box under a book looks no less interesting. This decoration option can be seen in the photo.

Interior decoration

A decoupage style box should look beautiful not only externally, but also inside. You can use fabric to decorate the inside of a wooden box.

All actions must be performed step by step:

  1. Choose a suitable fabric and cut a piece out of it equal in size to the bottom of the box. Velvet of scarlet or emerald color will look beautiful.
  2. Stick double-sided tape on the bottom of the box.
  3. Dilute PVA glue with water in a ratio of 1: 3.
  4. Soak the fabric in the glue and dry it.
  5. Stick the fabric onto double-sided tape.

What is decoupage? Decoupage is a way to show your talent, style and skill by decorating objects. With the help of decoupage, you can carry out different ideas, for example: an antique box, a vintage box, etc.

This article shows a decoupage master class. Also, after reading this article, you will learn how to make a box in the decoupage style and be able to apply the acquired skills to other subjects.

Decoupage wooden box

Decoupage wooden boxes is the most prudent way of training for both beginners and experienced craftsmen. This requires a minimum of skills, money and time. But even such a budget option is able to amaze all your loved ones.

For decoupage, you will need the following materials: an ordinary wooden box, acrylic primer, PVA glue, synthetic brush, napkins with a ready-made pattern, or paper that looks like a napkin.

Before you start decorating, you need to thoroughly walk with cotton wool soaked in peroxide or alcohol over the entire surface of the box. This will help clean the box from dust, but most importantly from grease (for example: fingerprints). After that, you must immediately start decorating the box.

There are many napkins available, and they come in varying degrees of layers. You need to separate all the others from the picture layer. In this decoupage technique, it is necessary to apply the primer with a hammering motion on the entire surface of the box. This will give it a relief and also help the napkin to hold more steadily.

Now you need to transfer the picture from the napkin to the box. To do this, you need to wait until the primer dries and you can walk with polished paper, but PVA glue is already needed when transferring the napkin to the box.

The second way: pre-mix the primer with glue and a napkin can be applied to the not dried primer. This method saves time. If you use the first method, then stir the PVA in the same ratio. Prepare the already peeled cloth for application.

Before applying a napkin or paper, it is necessary to grease the surface (already primed) of the box with glue. After that, gently, slightly pressing, attach a napkin or paper.

Keep track of the layers of the picture, there should be at least two layers, since the lack of layers can ruin everything, as well as brute force. In decoupage, the main thing is not to overdo it. We carry out everything as in the photo of the box in the decoupage.

It is necessary to ensure that there are no air bubbles under the napkin or paper, if you notice this, immediately smooth the surface. When everything is completely dry, a white background will appear. If you are thinking of other colors, then you need to pre-select an acrylic primer and paper of the appropriate color.

After you have completed the work and the box is dry, you need to apply a thin layer of varnish over the entire surface of the box, you can add additional decoration. You have a decoupage style box.

Decoupage caskets in the form of an antique book

This product will look like an old book resembling a box in the form of a decoupage style box. This box can even be used as a hiding place, putting it on a shelf with other books and no one will guess that this is actually not a book, but a box in decoupage.

To work you will need: a box in the form of a book, acrylic paints, varnish, stain, polishing or sandpaper, a spatula and a picture with the image.

You can use the idea as suggested above - an antique book. You must understand that the finished product should give the effect of antiquity, it is for this that you do not need to sand the box, it is enough to cover the box with stain of the desired color.

After covering the box with stain, it should dry out. Only after that you need to go through with sandpaper, the product will lighten a little and unnecessary irregularities will be removed.

At the next stage, you need to varnish the lid and do the same with the picture. Then, with the picture down, attach the paper to the box and press lightly, thereby removing bubbles under the paper.

After everything dries well, you need to soak the paper with water and remove it from the product, and the image that was on the paper will remain on the box. This procedure must be carried out on all edges of the box.

The final stage of decoupage is the application of paint, the main thing in this matter is not to overdo it, otherwise you can quickly ruin everything. Try to apply paint so that it seems that the book (box) has really been taken, leafed through and read many times, and these scuffs really look realistic.

Decoupage of a round wooden box

This master class on decoupage boxes will help transform even an old, unremarkable thing to amazing results. For this we need: acrylic paints, glue, a round wooden box, a sponge, napkins and a brush.

As stated above, before starting the decoration, it is recommended to walk with a cotton swab soaked in alcohol over the surface of the box. We cover the surface of the box with white paint with a thin layer, then apply a second layer, but this time in ivory.

We also separate the layers from the napkin, leaving the desired one. And we glue all the images to the box. We paint the side parts of the box with the color we need, and then apply paint with a sponge as in the photo of the box in decoupage.

The most important thing in this decoupage style box is that no air bubbles form under the napkin and the napkin itself should adhere well to the box.

Decoupage looks most interesting in Provence and Vintage.

Basic tools

What you need to have on hand:

Caskets that are used in creativity are also called basics.

  1. An old casket that needs to be updated, or a blank purchased in advance in the store;
  2. Sandpaper (fine-grained);
  3. Acrylic primer;
  4. Acrylic paints;
  5. Brushes;
  6. Foam rubber (or a regular dish sponge);
  7. PVA glue;
  8. Pictures with a suitable pattern;
  9. Additional decorative elements (accessories, ribbons, twine, etc.);
  10. Finishing varnish (matt or glossy, purely decorative or protective).

In the list of basic materials and tools, you can add polymer clay for creating volumetric elements or a coating for craquelure to create the effect of a cracked picture. For the aging effect, you need a regular wax candle (preferably colorless).

Round casket decoupage

Let's start with a small master class. The proposed idea is simple to execute and even a novice needlewoman can easily cope with it.

We need:

  • Ornament napkin;
  • A rag with a pattern - if you don't know how to draw at all;
  • If you know how to draw at least a little, then you will need a drawing that you want to draw and tracing paper;
  • Acrylic primer;
  • Acrylic paints: white, cream + for the pattern (it depends on the napkins), in our case, dark green;
  • Glue varnish (instead of the usual PVA);
  • Finish coating;
  • Brushes, sponges, sandpaper.

Stages of work:

An example of updating an old thing.

  1. If you have a blank purchased in a store, then it does not require additional sanding. If you take an old thing, then you need to clean it and go over it with a sandpaper.
  2. We prime the surface. Do not forget to prime the interior as well if you will paint over it. If you will be upholstering with fabric, then you do not need to prime. Let it dry.
  3. We paint the outer surface and the lid with white acrylic paint. When it dries a little, we coat the inner parts of the product with cream (if you are going to upholster with fabric, this is done at the very end).
  4. Let's put the lid aside for a while and get to the base. On the outside, using glue-varnish, glue a napkin with an ornament. Divide it into layers beforehand, you only need the thinnest top layer with the pattern. We stick it on. You can cut a rag in advance according to the height of the future product or carefully tear off the excess after gluing.
  5. You can age our little box a little. To do this, using a fine sandpaper, you need to remove some of the paint and ornament. After that, you can cover with a topcoat.
  6. Let's take care of the lid. The easiest option is to stick a picture on the lid using PVA or the same glue-varnish. It is better to cut off the edges of the napkin. The second option with painting requires additional preparation. Apply the desired pattern to the tracing paper. Paint over the inside of the tracing paper with a colored pencil. Next, we put tracing paper on the lid and outline it with a pencil. Now there is a drawing on the lid. We mix green and white paint to get a couple of shades and paint the base. Let it dry.
  7. We cover with a matte finish varnish. Let it dry, cover with a second layer.
  8. After complete drying, you can add rhinestones to our decor.

Often, instead of applying a patterned cloth to the sides of the base, they are simply painted and decorated with a wide ribbon or lace, on top of which stick on a narrower tape and tie a bow.

Provence style decoration

First, let's figure out what is typical for Provence. Colors: white and pastel. Firstly, scuffs and roughness... Secondly, lavender, sunflowers, everything related to winemaking, plant and floral elements.

For the next MK, materials are required the same. We will need a wax candle, acrylic paints of dark brown and any light (white, milky, lavender, etc.) colors.

Stages of work:

Provence with shades of purple always looks very sophisticated.

  1. If necessary, we grind our workpiece. We clean and cover with a primer.
  2. We paint the outer part with dark brown paint. Let it dry.
  3. Then, with a wax candle, we go through all the folds and corners, as well as along the sidewalls in a chaotic manner.
  4. We paint over all surfaces with light paint.
  5. After complete drying, you need to walk with a zero sandpaper over the places where we had wax, a dark layer will appear there and there will be an effect of wear and aging. Instead of a skin, you can take a hard metal sponge for dishes.
  6. Then you can simply apply the selected ornament to the cover. First, apply craquelure so that cracks appear. Then glue the patterned cloth.
  7. We cover with a finishing matte varnish.
  8. A good addition would be elegant semi-antique fittings, which could be lying around in your bins and which, if desired, can be specially purchased. A small thing will look unusual if you attach semi-antique legs to it - it will take on the appearance of a chest. For decoration, it will be appropriate to hang a decorative lock or a working clasp lock.

The photos from other master classes show interesting products in Provence that will look good in the kitchen or in the country.

Decoupage in vintage style

Another popular style is Vintage. The name originates from the French wine term... The effect of antiquity is characteristic, the colors are muted and pastel.

In contrast to Provence, dark colors are also used here. The images contain children, toys (mostly bears), animals, ladies, plump angels, flowers, in particular, roses, but not bright cheerful shades, as in shabby chic, but more calm deaf flowers. For additional decor you can use imitation pearls, lace. All the effects of aging are extremely popular - craquelure, scuffs. Round crafts look original and elegant in Vintage.

Below you will find a small workshop on making a casket in the Vintage for the New Year and Christmas. So, the main task is pick up pictures relevant topics. But since vintage postcards, especially Christmas ones, are all the rage right now, it's not hard to do.

If you didn't like anything, you can print your favorite picture on a color printer both on a napkin and on photo paper. Simply attach it with tape to A4 sheet and print, then work as with a regular napkin.

Photo paper should be covered with 4 layers of acrylic varnish, letting each layer dry for 1-2 minutes. Then we put our picture in water for a few minutes, take out and carefully separate the top layer-film with the picture. Next, we apply to the product using a file.

Preparing the base before applying the image is the same as for Provence. Choose the colors according to the taste and color of the picture. For Christmas and Christmas products the bottom layer can be dark blue or emerald... And the top one is snow-white. Before applying the finishing varnish, you can decorate with pearlescent glitter.

Experienced craftsmen show real class. Here's one example: decorating a box (video) in a French vintage style and a master class with amazing design ideas.

Let our ideas and the workshop below inspire your creativity. Good luck!

Every woman and girl has a personal box in which she keeps jewelry, cosmetics or other things. You can buy a box in a store or create a unique item with your own hands. This is not so difficult to do. The main thing is to choose the right way to decorate.

Casket self made, made in classic style

The shabby chic style is gaining more and more popularity every year.

You can decorate boxes with anything. Buttons, paper flowers are useful for decoration, beautiful napkins, lace fabric, clay, beads, beads, colored glass, coins and so on. The uniqueness of the jewelry is limited only by the imagination of the master. Of course, the set of tools and materials will largely depend on the decoration technique.

In most cases, the boxes are made of wood. To get a well-executed creation, special attention will need to be paid to initial stage preparation:

Light motives of nature on a Provence style box

Stylish box made from improvised means

The most popular is the decoupage technique, which has been known to masters for several centuries. Napkins are useful for decoration, beautiful pictures, pieces of fabric. Decorating the box using decoupage technique can be both a professional and a novice master.

You can create a relief covering of the box with your own hands. In this case, it will come in handy: relief paste or modeling gels, stones, shells, beads and other volumetric elements.

If you have at least minimal artistic skills, then the box can be painted. There are many styles: Khokhloma, Gzhel, Gorodets painting. You can paint your own unique composition.

Decoupage

For work, you will need the following materials:

  • napkins, magazine clippings, or scraps of fabric;
  • PVA glue;
  • acrylic paint;
  • brushes;
  • scissors;
  • sandpaper.

At the first stage, the box is prepared for decoration. The surface should be perfectly smooth, as later all defects may become more noticeable. When the product is prepared and dried, you can start decorating:

  1. Cut and try on elements of the composition from napkins or fabric.
  2. Place the notch to the surface and gently apply the glue, smoothing the paper from the center to the edges. If fabric is used in the decoupage technique, then glue will not work, it is better to take a stapler and attach the fabric to the inner covers of the box.
  3. Dry the product.
  4. Cover with varnish (if using fabric, this step is optional).

Using decoupage technique, the box can be decorated both outside and inside.

Advice! Various photographs can be used for decoupage. But first, it is better to remove the bottom layer so that the paper is thinner.

Stylish vintage never goes out of style

A box with a mohair fabric will be both practical and a wonderful decor for the interior.

Vinyl wallpapers

You can use the remnants of vinyl wallpaper to decorate the boxes. Thanks to simple steps, you can make a unique item with a "metal" coating. For this you will need:

  • wallpaper;
  • PVA glue;
  • towel (disposable paper is better);
  • acrylic paints in several colors (black, bronze, scarlet, silver, green, gold);

You can decorate the entire box as a whole, as well as certain elements. To complete the work, take the following steps:

  1. Cut pieces out of the wallpaper, taking into account the allowances for the sides.
  2. To glue the surface with an even layer, glue is applied to the back of the paper. The glue can be thinned slightly with water. The base should be very well saturated with the resulting solution.
  3. The paper needs to lie down a little, and then it is pressed tightly against the box with a sponge.

Important! It is imperative to watch that bubbles do not appear.

After the described actions, the product should dry out and then really give the box the appearance of metal.

Attention! The paint is applied with damp towels, it should lie unevenly.

  1. Initially, black acrylic paint is applied as a base. Can be used dark color in a spray can.
  2. With the help of towels, the box is covered in red and dried.
  3. The next layer is silver and then bronze.
  4. After that (in small amount!) repeat black and red colors
  5. Now carefully, using a damp towel, cover the entire box in green.
  6. The last layer is gold.

After the box is dry, it is varnished.

Painting

It is not necessary to have the talent of an artist to paint a product. In addition, it is allowed to use stencils to decorate the box. You can choose absolutely any image, it all depends on imagination and preferences. To work you will need:

  • box or box;
  • primer;
  • acrylic paints;
  • brushes;
  • stencil (you can make it yourself or buy it in a specialized store);
  • masking tape;
  • sandpaper.

Advice! It is better to pre-treat the box with sandpaper and varnish.

One of the features of the shabby chic style is floral motifs

Standard box mustard color with ribbons - simple and beautiful

Stylish scale made using decoupage technique

The work includes several stages:

  1. Coating with a primer.
  2. Sanding.
  3. Sealing the bottom corners with tape.
  4. Coating the product with light acrylic paint.

Important! Acrylic is applied evenly.

  1. After drying, the surface is treated with sandpaper and a layer of paint is applied a shade darker. This layer should be liquid, so that later you can blot it with a sponge, giving the surface a texture.
  2. Fix the base with varnish.
  3. Masking tape covers parts of the box that will not be decorated.
  4. The selected stencil is attached.
  5. The drawing is carefully painted over. The paint should be thick, water is used in a minimum amount.

Perhaps, after drying, the drawing will have to be painted over, since the first time the color will most likely be pale. If the stencil is a small element of the composition, then the action will have to be repeated several times. After the painting has dried, the box is varnished.

This master class allows you to create a product, the surface of which looks like a fabric. This is achieved due to the fact that the box is varnished between the main layers, and the paint does not saturate the wood.

The box decorated with beads and leaves looks very beautiful

This type of casket decor will be an excellent addition to the interior or an original gift.

Volumetric decor

The next master class is devoted to creating a volumetric decor with your own hands. The decoupage technique will be used here again. To work you will need:

  • box;
  • printout of the picture in duplicate (on glossy and matte photographic paper);
  • acrylic paints (it is better to choose glossy);
  • putty;
  • palette knife;
  • sandpaper;
  • acrylic paints of different colors;
  • brushes of different numbers (№1 - required!);
  • felt on an adhesive base;
  • lace, ribbons;
  • thick glue;
  • scissors;
  • primer;
  • masking tape;
  • transparent, quick-drying and reliable glue (you can use "Moment").

The surface is pre-prepared with sandpaper. At this stage, it is worth considering that the paint will give a certain thickness to the walls and the lid may not close tightly. Therefore, in the joints, sanding the tree must be especially careful. After that, the surface is primed.

Shabby chic style combines a large number of details

Decorating the box with beads will make it brighter and more presentable

Provence style box, made in blue

Registration is carried out in several stages:

Advice! If folds cannot be avoided, then you can drive them off to different leaves or flower petals, and then "hide" behind a drawing.

  1. The dried surface is fixed with varnish.
  2. To create volume, putty or structural paste is applied to certain elements of the pattern. The layer should not exceed three millimeters. Leave an indent from the edge.
  3. The bulges are processed with sandpaper.
  4. From the second figure, images are cut along the contour, which should be three-dimensional and glued to the cover.
  5. After drying, the contours are drawn with acrylic paints.
  6. The rest of the product is decorated and varnished.

Thanks to the master class, you can easily do it yourself original box with a volumetric pattern.
