Reichsführer SS Himmler, like no one else, understood how important the symbolism played in his “black order”. Guided by these considerations, on April 10, 1934, he established one of the most mysterious attributes of the SS - the Death's Head ring.

Designed by Himmler's close associate Wiligut, the ring was adorned with runes, oak leaves, and a death's head, symbols that contributed greatly to the mystique surrounding the SS.

It was both a product and a source of a touch of arrogance inherent in all elite combat formations. The very idea of ​​a ring with runic symbols was undoubtedly borrowed from Germanic mythology.

According to myths, the god Thor had a ring of pure silver, by whose name the ancient Germans swore, just as Christians swear on the Bible.

The words of the oath were carved in runes on the spear of Odin (Wotan). The Death's Head ring was a piece of silver in the form of a wreath of oak leaves, on which were images of a death's head, two zig runes, a swastika, a heilszeichen and a hagall rune. Inside the ring was engraved the inscription: Meinem lieben (to my dear), followed by the name of the owner, the date of delivery and a facsimile of Himmler.

Technologically, the ring was made from a silver plate, which was bent and a dead head made from a separate piece of silver was soldered over the seam. The rings were finished by hand by Otto Gahr jewelers.

The larger the diameter of the ring, the greater was the distance between the zig-runes located to the left and right of the dead head. The ring was 7 mm wide and 3.5 mm thick.

Among the members of the SS, the ring was highly valued. Initially, such rings were awarded only to representatives of the "old guard", whose number did not exceed 5,000 people. However, by 1939 the criteria for receiving the ring had softened.

On October 17, 1944, due to the difficult military situation, the production and distribution of rings were stopped for the duration of the war. Official SS data show that in 10 years (from 1934 to 1944) about 14,500 rings were awarded. By January 1, 1945, 64% of the rings had arrived at the Wewelsburg vault (which indicates that the ring was more often awarded to commanders of the SS Troops), 26% were in the hands of the owners and 10% were lost on the battlefields. Thus, by the end of the war, a little over 3,500 rings were in circulation outside Wewelsburg.

In the spring of 1945, Himmler ordered a directed explosion to wall up the rings from the vault into the rock near Wewelsburg so that they would not fall into the hands of the enemies.
