The main attributes of any carnival are costumes and masks, which help to hide social differences and equalize everyone during the festival. In Russia, dressing up and having fun in masks was allowed only on Christmas and Maslenitsa. The initiator of the masquerades in Russia was Peter I - a passionate lover of dressing up. In 1721, a magnificent street fancy-dress procession was organized ”. Workshop 4: papier-mâché carnival mask

Another traditional mask-making technique available to children aged 6 and over is the papier-mâché technique. In this technique, you can sculpt a mask of any, the most bizarre shape. How you can make a papier-mâché mask from a regular roll of ... toilet paper, you will learn in this step-by-step video. Babies can also be attracted to making papier-mâché. Of course, it will still be difficult for them to sculpt a mask, but they will be happy to paint it with acrylics.

An example of a children's carnival mask using the papier-mâché technique

Here is a mask made of paper using the papier-mâché technique by Daria Kholina (6 years old). Educator - Rim Elena Anatolyevna (MBDOU "Combined Kindergarten No. 75" Fairy Tale ", Moscow Region, Sergiev Posad District, Shemetovo village, mn Novy).

How to make a mask like this:

Step 1. Make a plasticine impression - the basis for making a mask. You need to complete the shape of the mask that you want to make. In this case, special attention should be paid to the impression of the nose and eyes. it is very important.

Step 2. Layer by layer, lay the pieces of paper (toilet paper) on the base using PVA glue. There should be 5-6 such layers (for the strength of the product).

Step 3. After 2-3 days, after the mask has dried, we give it the desired color, decorate and insert an elastic band to fit the head. This is what happened with six-year-old Dasha.

Master class 5. Simple carnival paper mask

It is not at all necessary to make a complex mask. The simplest paper mask can be made very simply and quickly, and its production is accessible even to kids.

Here are examples of such masks.

Example mask # 1

The first mask was made by Kristina Shmatkova, 6 years old. Educator - Abasheva Yulia Mansurovna (MBDOU "Combined Kindergarten No. 75" Fairy Tale "Moscow region, Sergiev Posad district, Shemetovo village, mn Novy).

How to make such a mask quickly and easily:

Step 1. Come up with an image of a mask for a child.

Step 2. Cut the mask out of thick cardboard.

Step 3. Decorate with appliques and sequins. Insert an elastic band to fit the child's head.

The mask is ready!

Advice 1. Such masks can be made on the basis of a ready-made template. In this case, a picture of the mask is printed on the printer and cut out with scissors. It is glued onto thick cardboard. On the sides of the mask, holes for the elastic are made with a hole punch. An elastic band is inserted into the mask to fit the child's head.

Tip 2. You can sew details to the mask. In this case, a part is cut out for the seamy side of the mask, which exactly follows the contour of the mask in shape. The seams are hidden under this detail.

Tip 3. Any mask can be colored. It is better to paint the masks with acrylic paints, because they are durable and do not get dirty in the future. The mask can be stored and used for years to come.

Example mask # 2

Here's another example of a simple paper carnival mask made of cardboard. The mask was painted on cardboard, cut from a template. Next, the child paints the mask. Holes are made along the edges for the rubber band and it is inserted into the mask. You can go to the carnival.

These carnival paper masks were made by children from the kindergarten of the State Budgetary Educational Institution Lyceum 1564 d / o Raduga together with their parents. Teachers - Nadezhda Alekseevna Kishka and Saygibat Abdulkadyrovna Magomedova.

More ideas for making carnival costumes for children with your own hands can be found in the heading .

Festive events in preschool institutions, and even in elementary school, rarely go without a carnival. And what is a carnival without masks? Then the parents have a question, how to make a paper mask for a child?

It should be remembered that making a mask out of paper is a rather creative process that is necessary, first of all, for the education and development of a child. In addition, this process helps to expand the horizons and develops the imagination of children.

What are the types of paper masks?

All paper masks can be roughly divided into:

  • flat;
  • voluminous;
  • from papier-mache;
  • masks on the hoop.

The easiest to make flat paper masks for children. They can be of various shapes: triangular, round, square, etc. For their manufacture, a pre-prepared paper layout is used. Cutting it along the contour and coloring it, you get a mask.

Volumetric paper masks, for example, of animals, are made using various cuts, special grooves, which are subsequently glued together. At the same time, the process of making a pattern takes a lot of time. However, this is a very exciting activity, so the children are happy to do them.

Making a mask out of paper with your own hands, using papier-mâché technology, is the most difficult type of all the masks considered. They look more solid and can be made by high school students.

Paper masks glued to the hoop are also pretty easy to make. All that is required is a hoop and a mask cut out from a template, which, after decorating, is glued to the existing hoop. These masks are suitable for young children, and can be perfectly used at a matinee in kindergarten.

It is especially difficult to make origami masks out of paper. To do this, it is necessary to master the whole technique, which is taught in special circles of children's creativity.

How to make a paper mask yourself?

Before making paper masks, you need to decide which one you will make. First you need to prepare the material and the tool. The material is usually colored or used. Masks from the latter are more durable and durable. In order to extend the life of a paper mask, it can also be simply glued to any cardboard.

Let's consider how you can make a paper mask "Cat". To do this, you need to take a dense landscape sheet (better for drawing).

Fold it in half lengthwise to get the line of the nose. Then we fold the sheet across, resulting in the line of the eyes. Taking sharp scissors in hand, we make slits for the eyes. Then we draw the cat's face on the front side of the mask, and only then we cut out the mask along the depicted contour.

In the same way, you can make a volume mask. To do this, you just need to make incisions in the area of the eyebrows and nose, bending the cut pieces of paper inward.

It remains only to paint the mask with paints and it is ready! Paper masks of this kind are suitable for both girls and boys.

It is especially interesting for children to make a papier-mâché mask. This will require a balloon, old junk newspaper, and glue. First you need to inflate a small balloon. Then, having previously torn the newspaper into small pieces, you can proceed to pasting the ball with them. The paper is glued in several layers and allowed to dry well. After that, you can cut off the mask from the ball and start decorating it.

The same can be done right on the face of the child. In this case, instead of glue, petroleum jelly or glue is used. Gluing the pieces of paper layer by layer, we end up with an exquisite mask in which you can go to a school ball.

Thus, making paper masks is a rather fun process that gives children a lot of positive emotions.

A carnival mask can be both an addition to a New Year's costume, and an independent accessory that allows you to create an unusual mysterious festive image. Of course, you can buy a New Year's mask in the store, especially since the selection of masks is now large. But it is much more interesting to make a mask with your child with your own hands. Making a carnival mask with your own hands is a very useful creative activity, as a result of which the child will acquire skills for work. In this article we will teach you how to make masks out of paper and cardboard, you will learn how to make a papier mache mask yourself. You will also find interesting master classes on making carnival masks with your own hands from paper plates and felt. We will share with you all the secrets of how to make a mask with your own hands.

1. Mask with your own hands. Papier mache mask

We'll start our review article on New Year's masks with papier mache masks. The word "papier-mache" is translated from French as "chewed paper" or "torn paper". There are two ways to create papier-mâché products.

The first is molding from a formable mass consisting of soft paper and adhesive. The second is gluing torn paper in layers, this type is also called waving. Papier-mâché carnival masks are made in just the second way.

How to make a simple papier mache mask:

We need a regular balloon. Inflate the balloon to the size you want. The size of the ball should correspond to the size of the face on which you are making the mask.

Prepare the materials necessary for the work. To make a papier mache mask, you will need: PVA glue, old newspapers, toilet paper or any other soft paper that absorbs liquid well. Also, to make a papier mache mask, you will need a wide bowl (plate) to dilute the glue.

Tear the paper with your hands into small pieces (just pick, not cut with scissors). Dissolve PVA glue with water in a bowl in a 2: 1 ratio. If you don't have glue, you can replace it with homemade starch or flour paste. Spread the ball with greasy cream (vaseline). This is to prevent the paper from sticking to the surface of the ball. Dip each piece of paper sequentially into a mixture of glue and water, glue the entire ball in 3-4 layers with paper. It is necessary to glue the paper so that the pieces intersect with each other, overlap each other.

Leave the paper-covered balloon to dry. When the glue is dry, pierce a ball with a needle through the layers of paper.

We pass to the next crucial stage of making a mask with our own hands. Using a utility knife or regular scissors, cut the blank for the carnival mask in two. Depending on your idea, you can make two identical halves, or cut out one large mask covering the entire face and part of the head. Carefully cut holes for the eyes in the mask (you can't do without the bottom). If desired, you can also make a hole for the mouth and nostrils. With slits for the nose, a child in such a mask with his own hands will breathe much more freely.

The most interesting and creative part of the work on making a papier-mâché carnival mask remains. We need to decorate and paint the mask. For decoration, you can use lace, feathers, beads, sequins, beautiful fabric and any other materials. It is best to paint the mask with your own hands with acrylic paints. Note: Before painting the mask to make it smoother, you can sand the carnival mask with sandpaper.

2. How to make a mask. DIY Christmas mask

We told you about the simplest and most affordable way to make a mask with your own hands. Now let's move on to the more complicated options. The Country of Masters website has an interesting master class on making a carnival mask with your own hands right on your face. To protect the skin of the face, the first few layers are laid out simply from wet wipes. Only then does the author begin to glue the pieces of paper onto PVA glue.

The paper is glued in 3-4 layers. Then you need to carefully remove the carnival mask and put it on crumpled newspapers or cloth so that the volume and shape are preserved. So dry. Wet layers from napkins must be torn off after 2-3 hours so that the rest dries faster. It is better to dry without a battery, so that the mask does not "lead".

After the blank for the New Year's mask dries up with our own hands, we cut out the desired shape. It is better to paint a homemade mask for the New Year with acrylic paints - they are glossy, dry quickly and do not stain with sweat. It remains only to decorate the mask.

What is good about a DIY mask made using the technology described above? It exactly follows the contours of the face of the person for whom it was made. Therefore, such a carnival mask will sit better and be much more comfortable to wear.

3. Carnival mask with your own hands. How to make a paper mask

On the Internet you can find and download ready-made paper mask templates. To make such a mask out of paper, you just need to print the template on a color printer and glue it according to the instructions. For example, on this site you will find ready-made paper mask templates. Choose the mask you like, follow the link, enter your name and email address in the blank fields on the page with the description of the paper mask. mail. The mask templates will be sent to you at the specified email address.

4. How to make a mask with your own hands

An integral and most important accessory of the masquerade is the mask! You can create it with your own hands, and it will take very little time to create such a craft. In this master class, we will make a mask out of a material such as paper.

First, you need to prepare all the tools and materials necessary for work:

  • high-density colored paper or ordinary cardboard (base material);
  • pencil or marker;
  • scissors;
  • stencil template;
  • summer;
  • glue stick;
  • decor (colored feathers, a small rose made of satin ribbon and decorative stones).

It is better if the paper or cardboard used is not just plain, but with an interesting pattern. First, using a pencil and a template, we transfer the outline of the future mask to the back of colored paper or cardboard.

Try to clearly draw all the fold lines. Next, cut out the mask along the resulting path.

Then carefully poke holes for the eyes. Here's a blank should turn out!

On the right side of the mask, there will be a small decor that will add originality to our accessory. We need, using glue, to glue a small rose to the top of the craft.

Then attach some colored feathers.

Next, decorate the surface of the mask with various colored stones. A drop of glue is applied to the back of the rhinestone, and then the decor is placed in a specific place. In the center of the craft, you need to attach an oval red pebble.

On the left, at the top of the mask, glue the pebbles-droplets of a lilac shade.

On the other side of the craft, do the same.

After that, glue round, red, pebbles.

Complete them with small “droplets” of the same shade.

Add a couple more decorative stones to the center. Here's what we got!

Now, to fix the mask, you need to attach a tape to the side parts of the craft. First, you need to fold it in half, and then cut it in half. We got two ribbons of the same length.

On the tip of each, apply glue and attach them to the back of the mask.

On the front side, at the base of the ribbons, glue the orange pebbles.

Leave the craft for several hours until the glue is completely dry. Now the mask is ready!

Elementary school, kindergarten, carnivals and performances are directly related to children's masks. Many of us unfairly perceive the manufacture of carnival masks as unnecessary chores and problems. It should be remembered that creating masks is a creative process that your child needs first of all for his development and learning. With the help of masks, not only purposeful communication takes place, the development of creative abilities and skills, but also the horizons expand, the imagination develops, the child learns to think and reflect, to improvise. Let's learn together how to make a paper mask.

Varieties of masks

  1. flat
  2. voluminous
  3. half masks
  4. papier-mâché
  5. masks on the hoop

Masks will give your child the opportunity to be someone else. Make his dream come true!

Flat masks can be round, triangular, or any other arbitrary shape. They can be made according to a ready-made template or independently from thick cardboard. Such masks are painted, appliques and additional elements are pasted on them.

Volumetric paper masks are obtained using special undercuts, cuts, gluing and gluing additional pieces of paper. Creating a pattern is a very exciting process, and it does not require a lot of time and skill.

Half masks are good for carnival parties. They are shaped like original glasses and cover only part of the face.

Papier-mâché masks are a more complex variety, but they also look solid and impressive. Having made several blanks from papier-mâché, you can create the most diverse and outstanding masks on their basis.

Masks on the hoop help out if the child finds it difficult to breathe in a mask, dressed directly on his face, or if the child wears glasses. The mask is made according to the usual principle of a flat mask and fixed on a special steel or paper hoop. The hoop should be suitable for the size of the head, and the mask itself may cover part of the face, for example, the nose.

Basic manufacturing rules

For the manufacture of paper masks, paper products and auxiliary items are used as a basis.

A blank is prepared from paper, which is subsequently decorated and modified depending on desire and imagination.

Main materials:

  • colored and plain paper
  • cardboard
  • newspaper
  • paper plates
  • napkins

Additional materials:

  • paints, pencils, markers
  • plasticine, clay
  • pieces of fabric, fur, feathers
  • beads, buttons, beads
  • scissors, stapler, needle and thread, hole punch, stationery knife

Methods for making conventional blanks

The easiest way is to use a ready-made template that can be found on the Internet. Print the template, stick it on thick cardboard. Make holes for the eyes and on the sides, insert the elastic.

Different sizes of paper plates also allow you to create different mask bases.

Look for simple accessible pictures of cartoon characters or animals. Draw them on paper with your child and make masks.

To make a half mask, you just need to take glasses, circle them on paper and cut them out.

Use a paper pattern to make volume masks. To do this, take a thick white sheet of paper ½ of a landscape sheet. Bending the sheet in half, we get the line of the nose, once again in half - the line of the eyes.

Make slits at the temples and up to the middle of the eyebrows on the forehead. To keep the nose bulging, pinch it from the inside with a stapler.

Bring the grooves on the forehead behind each other and glue. Glue the corners at the temples inward. Pull the nose from the front a little forward and glue it.

This blank can be used to create masks for various characters. Glue the ears, change the nose and eyes, combine the colors.

Papier-mâché blank masks

You will need a balloon, glue, and newspaper. Divide the newspaper into small pieces and glue the balloon with them. After making a few layers, let them dry.

After there are enough layers and they dry well, cut the workpiece in two. You have received two blanks for future masks. Use a utility knife to cut holes for the eyes and get creative with the mask.

Take newspapers from two different publishers (with different fonts) or divide the same newspapers into white stripes and stripes with a font. This separation is necessary in order not to get confused with the layers.

Cover your face with petroleum jelly or cream. Dampen the first layer of the pieces of paper with water and apply to your face. The layer should be dense and large. Alternate subsequent layers (depending on the publisher or font) and apply with glue to the first layers.

When the desired thickness is reached, remove the workpiece and let it dry well. Cut holes for the eyes, trim and trim the edges.

Make a plasticine frame. Plasticine is convenient in that it can be used to create the necessary image in advance. Divide the paper, preferably newspaper, into small pieces.

Cover the plasticine with a thin film and glue the pieces of paper. Remember to dry the finished layers. Glue on top with plain thick paper. After a few hours, remove the workpiece from the frame.

How to make a nose?

Sculpt a nose of the desired shape from plasticine. Cover it with pieces of torn newspaper. As soon as the nose dries well, carefully remove the plasticine.

The flat cap can be a great spot for a piglet mask.

A half plastic ball or large bubble cap will fit the clown's nose. Punch holes in the sides and tie the strings (to keep the nose from dropping).

A folded sheet of paper will fit the nose of a mouse or fox.

Making masks with your child, you create your own world - create it together and with your own hands!

Examples of paper masks

Indian mask

For this mask, take two paper plates, large and small. On a large plate, use glasses to circle the eyes and cut them out with a clerical knife.

Use a hole punch on the sides to make two holes for the elastic. Give the plate the shape of your face.

Paint the mask in the desired color, glue the feathers and glitter. Make a small incision in the middle for the nose.

Cut a small plate in half, fasten or glue one half - this is the nose. Color it in and insert it into the cut, securing it with glue.

In this way, you can prepare masks for a wide variety of characters.

Make a paper frame using undercuts. Cut out the round eyes (they will narrow when you pinch the nose from the inside out), glue cardboard triangles in the slots in the temples, and tape to them. This will come in handy for rubber bands.

Make the ears: semicircular or triangular. Nose - with a bag or ribbon. Don't forget to draw or glue the saber tusks.

Mouse, fox, hedgehog masks

We use a ready-made frame with grooves. The main thing is to find a sheet of paper that matches the color or paint it in the desired color.

All these masks have a common similarity - a nose bag. Differences in the eyes: in the mouse - round, in the fox - narrow. Ears: fox and hedgehog have triangular ears, mouse - round.

Do not forget about the needles for the hedgehog and the antennae for the chanterelle with the mouse.

When making a mask, consider not only your creativity and availability of free time, but also the age of the child. The child should not only use the mask as an element of the carnival costume, but also take part in its production.

Do not throw away various small objects, broken elements of toys, scraps, corks, children's bright books. When disassembling desk drawers or children's toys, put aside seemingly unnecessary items that catch your eye. Start a special box and collect them in it.

If educational games with a child are welcome in your family, these seemingly unnecessary items will surely find their use in the future.

Observe the preferences of the child, make masks of those heroes that he likes the most. When the process of mastery captivates the child, try to make masks of other unknown heroes, expand the knowledge and imagination of your child.

Turn creativity into play and learning. Come up with fairy tales for your heroes, tell new unknown facts about them. Motivate your child to ask questions, compose fairy tales. Let him invent the next hero himself.
