The November holidays are about to come - in Russia in November they celebrate one of the central state holidays of the Russian Federation, that is, the Day of National Unity, which is celebrated annually on November 4.

National Unity Day in Russia is celebrated quite recently - the first celebration took place on November 4, 2005 - but its history begins much earlier, several centuries ago.

There is only one official holiday - November 4, but in 2017 this day falls on Saturday, respectively, Russians are interested in what days are allotted by the current legislation for rest on November holidays in order to properly plan these mini-vacations.

Sputnik Georgia inquired about this issue and offers you a full weekend calendar.

What are they celebrating

The Day of National Unity is a memory of the liberation of Moscow in 1612 from the Polish interventionists by the people's militia, which was headed by the Nizhny Novgorod zemstvo head Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky. This date is a turning point in the history of Russia, it is she who marks the end of the Time of Troubles.

Representatives of all classes and all peoples that make up the Russian state took part in the national militia to liberate the Russian land from foreign invaders.

With a list of the miraculous icon of the Kazan Mother of God, revealed in 1579, the Nizhny Novgorod zemstvo militia managed on November 4, 1612 to storm Kitay-Gorod and expel the Poles from Moscow.

This victory served as a powerful impetus for the revival of the Russian state. And the icon has become a subject of special reverence.

It should be noted that the feast of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, or a feast in honor of the day of the liberation of Moscow and Russia from the Poles in 1612, was celebrated in Russia before the October Revolution. In those early days, this day in the country was also a day off.

On the Day of National Unity, solemn concerts, fireworks, and mass festivities will be held throughout Russia.

A large, many-thousand-strong march through the city and the laying of flowers at the memorial to Minin and Pozharsky are planned.

The first monument in Moscow

The first sculptural composition dedicated to the national heroes - Minin and Pozharsky, was created with donations that were collected throughout Russia at the initiative of the Free Society of Lovers of Literature, Sciences and Arts, which was also the first time.

The donations collected were enough not only for the creation of the famous sculptural composition, but also for the obelisk in Nizhny Novgorod, where, in fact, the second militia was born.

The monument, the grand opening of which took place on February 20, 1818 (March 4 in the new style), is located on Red Square. The sculptor Ivan Martos became the author of the monument.

On the bas-reliefs of the pedestal, a collection of funds for the militia, which took place throughout Russia, is displayed, and the inscription is carved: "To Citizen Minin and Prince Pozharsky - grateful Russia". Copper and brass were used to create the monument, and granite was used for the pedestal.

In honor of the outstanding event, guards marched on Red Square with a parade, and the number of people gathered was such that the spectators had to sit even on the trees and towers of the Kremlin.

Initially, the monument to Minin and Pozharsky was located in the middle of Red Square, opposite the entrance to the Upper Trading Rows (now the GUM building), but in 1931 it was considered an obstacle to demonstrations and parades of military equipment and was moved to St. Basil's Cathedral.

Celebrated for the 14th time in 2018. This is an official day off (Article 112 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation).

National Unity Day: what a holiday

On November 4, there was one of the main Orthodox holidays- Day of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God - a spiritual symbol of the liberation of the Russian capital from foreign invaders.

It was the copies of this icon, miraculously found in Kazan in 1579, that first helped the first zemstvo militia in battles with the occupiers, and then the second, which, led by Prince D. Pozharsky, drove the Poles out of Moscow.

Then, in November 1612, a radical turning point came in overcoming the Troubles and the fight against foreign intervention.

Moreover, this was achieved not by the army, not by the army assembled by the authorities, but by the people's militia, a self-organized movement. This is the only such case in Russian history.

The restoration of Russian statehood by the forces of the people, who, having expelled the Polish interventionists, themselves chose the new government, and the derivation of the genealogy modern Russia dated November 4, 1612 and is the political meaning of the holiday.

Indeed, then Russia was saved from one of the greatest dangers that it faced in history. Russia's complete loss of sovereignty was more than real.

The demographic, economic, financial, political and military capabilities of Poland were significantly higher than the Russian ones - only in terms of population, Russia was almost 2 times inferior to Poland (7 million versus 12 million people).

Let's add to this the betrayal of the comprador clique - the boyars, who swore allegiance to the prince Vladislav (for a completely legitimate transfer of power, only the signature of Patriarch Hermogenes was not enough).

And we will get a completely unpromising picture of the further history of Russia under the Lyakho-Lithuanian yoke, in which there would be no place either for the greatness of the Russian Empire of the Romanov era, or for the achievements and victories of the USSR.

Healthy forces were found among the ecclesiastical class (Patriarch Germogen, who refused to recognize the Polish sovereign, for which he was starved to death, the monks of the Trinity-Sergeev Lavra, who sent draft letters to Russia), common people (the Nizhny Novgorod butcher K. Minin, the Kostroma peasant I. Susanin), some representatives of the nobility (Ryazan nobleman P. Lyapunov, who started the first militia, hacked to death by the Cossacks, while trying to pacify looting, Prince D. Pozharsky). And they were all mainly from the provinces.

From the old, rooted in the history of the holiday, the Day of National Unity inherited many wonderful traditions. On this day in Russia, it was customary to forgive old debts, give gifts, give old things to the poor, etc.

How they celebrate

The first Day of National Unity was solemnly celebrated in 2005 - Nizhny Novgorod became the main center of the festive events. The main event of the holiday was the opening of the monument to Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky.

National Unity Day this year is planned to be celebrated as magnificently as in previous years. The most ambitious events are planned in Moscow and in Nizhny Novgorod, where the militia of Minin and Pozharsky came from.

A large, multimillion-dollar march through the city and the laying of flowers at the memorial to Minin and Pozharsky are planned.

On National Unity Day, festive events patriotic orientation, processions, festivities, fairs, exhibitions and so on. All major parks in Moscow have prepared a large entertainment program to the Day of National Unity.

The Kremlin will host the ceremony of presenting the President's Prize for Strengthening the Unity of the Russian Nation and the We Are United Concert.
