And in Russia until the 15th century, this holiday was celebrated on March 1, then on September 1. In 1699, Peter I issued a decree according to which the New Year began to be celebrated on January 1. At the same time, the Western European custom appeared among us to decorate houses these days with branches of fir and pine trees. True, Russians' New Year holidays have never been as long as they are now.

So, we are waiting for a whole ten days of rest - from December 29 to January 7. But in the USSR these days were working. Even January 1 was a normal working day in the Soviet Union from 1930 to 1947. And only since 1947, citizens of the Land of Soviets stopped going to work on New Year's Eve. And since 1992, January 2 has become a day off. But it wasn't until 2005 that Russians got long days off.

Of course, having learned that on New Year's Eve 2020 we will walk for ten, not eleven days, many will be upset. Based on the draft resolution of the Russian Government and in particular the Federal Ministry of Labor, the schedule of days off and working dates for the upcoming New Year period will be as follows: starting from December 30 to January 8 inclusive - New Year holidays will take place, so the duration of the New Year holidays this year will be 10 days, which is 1 day more than in 2017.

Thus, in January 2018, from the 31st calendar day, there will be 17 working days, while there will be 14 days off and holidays this month.

Rescheduling holidays in January

For a more rational use of time, the supreme authorities made the following decision: due to the fact that January 6 falls on Saturday (and according to the law this day belongs to the New Year holidays and is considered non-working), it is postponed to March 9. The postponement of weekends and holidays described above will not be the only one for January 2018. Due to the fact that January 7 - Christmas, is included in and falls on a calendar day off - Sunday, there will be another shift in the production calendar. In this case, the day off on January 7th is moved to May 2nd.

The question may arise: how are such movements of holiday dates legalized in the production calendar? The answer can be found by referring to the legislation of the Russian Federation, which states that in the case when a public holiday falls on a calendar day off (that is, Saturday or Sunday), it is automatically transferred to a nearby Monday or other convenient date. This date is negotiated at the highest level and finally established by adopting the relevant act and promulgating it.

New Year 2018: holidays and weekends

Every year, the Ministry of Labor tries to develop a regulation specifying weekdays and public holidays. Most often, planning New Year's holidays begins in October of this year. However, there is already a document that lists all holidays for January 2019.

Holidays and weekend shifts

Thanks to the New Year holidays 2019, we will receive as a bonus an uninterrupted series of three days off in March - from the 8th to the 10th. And all because the holidays on January 5 and 6 fall on non-working days - on Saturday and Sunday. Agree, it’s a shame to rest if, according to the calendar, these days you don’t have to go to work anyway. Therefore, at their expense, we added two days off in March.

Next year, several holidays coincide with the weekend. In order to comply with the norm of Article 110 of the Labor Code that there must be at least 42 hours of uninterrupted rest between two working weeks, and to allow Russians to have a good rest, the government adopted a resolution “On the postponement of days off in 2019”.

The days off on January 5 and 6 (Saturday and Sunday) in accordance with the Labor Code are already non-working days and are transferred to May 2 and 3, respectively (Thursday and Friday). Defender of the Fatherland Day, which fell on Saturday, will add a day of rest on Friday, May 10.

In total, in the first half of May we rest first from May 1 to May 5, and then from May 9 to 12. Between these mini-holidays, you will have to work only three days.

Also in 2019, a three-day weekend is planned (from March 8 to 10 and from November 2 to 4) and a traditional holiday on June 12.

In total, in 2019 there will be 26 days off combined with holidays.

• from 1 to 8 January 2019;
• February 23 and 24;
• from 8 to 10 March;
• from 1 to 5 May;
• from 9 to 12 May;

Cancellation of the New Year holidays in 2019

With the initiative to shorten the New Year holidays in Russia, people's deputies come forward every year. The last time a bill to reduce holidays to two days - December 31 and January 1 - was submitted to the State Duma about six months ago.

And now the difficulties begin. Christmas is not included in the number of public holidays, which means that it does not fall under the law on the transfer of holidays; This day is considered just a holiday.

The Government Decree “On the postponement of holidays and weekends in 2018” will put an end to this issue. The document will be published closer to the fall of 2017.

Let's summarize. Today, while there is still no final approval of the order, there are three main versions of the duration of the New Year holidays:

• 9 days - from December 30, 2017 to January 7, 2018 inclusive (to work on Monday, January 8);
• 10 days - from December 30, 2017 to January 8, 2018 inclusive (to work on Tuesday January 9) - most likely this option will remain, since it was approved by the Ministry of Labor on March 17, 2017;
• 12 days - from December 30, 2017 to January 10, 2018 inclusive (to work on Thursday January 11).

At the moment, the first version corresponds to the letter of Article 112 of the Federal Law “On Labor”; the latest version - the established long-term tradition of the "long" New Year's holiday. The second option turned out to be true, and it is on the basis of these dates that you plan your New Year holidays.

School holidays are loved and long-awaited not only for millions of students in our country, but also for their parents. In order to successfully plan the winter period of rest at school and the schedule of their holidays, parents should know the schedule for the New Year holidays for 2019-2020 and the dates when their children's studies begin. In many areas of production and services, there is an irregular working day, where people work for 12 hours or even days. For these categories of the working population, these features must be taken into account when drawing up the corresponding calendar plan. In general, in the country, with a 5-day working week, when a person works 8 hours every day, it is possible to determine the following features of accounting for working and non-working time in the first month of 2020.

In January 2020, the total number of days is 31. Official working days in January are 17. The number of non-working days is 14. Transfers of holidays to other dates are 2 (January 4 and 5).
